Wat Saen Fang (Thai: วัดแสนฝาง) is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The temple was founded in the 1500s, but all extant structures date to the 1800s or later. The viharn of Wat Saen Fang previously served as the royal residence (ho kham) of Kawirolot in the 1860s, and was converted into a viharn by his successor, Inthawichayanon in 1878. The temple is also noted for its Burmese-style chedi, which is gilded with glass mosaic. The ubosot, which is topped with kinnara, is a fusion of Burmese and Lan Na styles. Supamon Peerapornpisal attributes the ubosot and the kuti to U Pan Nyo (1845–1927), a Burmese timber merchant from Mawlamyine who was granted trade rights in Lan Na and is known in Thai as Luang Yonakan Phichit. She dates them to the 1870s and describes them as built in a Western manner influenced by British design in Burma. The kuti, known as the Yonakan Phichit building, has stucco-decorated windows and arches. Its upper floor carries a clerestory, which she compares to the division of space in a Christian church, with a central hallway and side halls. Supamon places the temple among eleven sites in Chiang Mai and Lampang where Western architectural features appear. She traces the route of that influence through Burma, a British colony from 1824 to 1948, and specifically through timber merchants working in Chiang Mai, rather than through any colonial rule over Siam. Across those sites she finds Western features chiefly in buildings of restricted access such as kutis and ubosots, while open-access buildings such as wihans remain in Lan Na or Burmese style.
