📖 About Tel Megiddo

Tel Megiddo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an archaeological mound containing 26 layers of settlement spanning 7,000 years, one of the most important in the Land of Israel. The ancient Via Maris passed here, and Megiddo controlled the strategic crossroads between Egypt and Mesopotamia. Megiddo is identified with Har Megiddo — Armageddon of the Book of Revelation, site of the apocalyptic battle. In reality, dozens of real historic battles took place here, including the earliest documented battle in the world (Thutmose III, 1457 BCE). Impressive finds are preserved: ornate city gates from the time of Solomon and Ahab, horse stables, a giant grain silo, and a sophisticated water system — a shaft and tunnel cut into the rock that brought water from a spring outside the city into it during a siege. The visitor center has a model of the mound and a film. The trail takes about 1.5 hours and includes descending into the impressive water tunnel. Combine it with Nazareth or Ein Harod.

תל מגידו (בערבית: تل المتسلم, תל אל-מֻתַסַלִם – "תל המושלים") הוא תל ארכאולוגי בעמק יזרעאל, סמוך לקיבוץ מגידו, מן האתרים הארכאולוגיים החשובים והנחקרים ביותר בישראל. התל שוכן בנקודה אסטרטגית השולטת על מעבר ואדי עירון ועל צומת מרכזי של דרך הים, ולכן שימש במשך אלפי שנים מרכז שלטוני, צבאי ומסחרי חשוב. ממצאי החפירות מעידים על רצף התיישבותי מן האלף הרביעי לפנה"ס ועד התקופה הפרסית, ובתל זוהו למעלה מעשרים שכבות יישוב. מגידו הייתה אחת הערים המרכזיות בכנען בתקופת הברונזה, ובתקופות מאוחרות יותר נכללה בתחום ממלכת ישראל. היא נזכרת פעמים רבות בתנ"ך, והקרבות שנערכו בסביבתה הקנו לה מקום מרכזי גם במסורת הנוצרית, שבה זוהתה עם ארמגדון. מגידו היא בין אתרים הארכאולוגיים הראשונים שנחפרו בארץ ישראל. החפירות הארכאולוגיות בתל שהחלו בראשית המאה ה-20, חשפו ארמונות, ביצורים, מקדשים, מערכת מים מונומנטלית וממצאים רבים שהפכו את מגידו לאתר מפתח בחקר ההיסטוריה והארכאולוגיה של ארץ ישראל והמזרח הקדום. האתר פתוח לקהל משנות ה-50 של המאה ה-20. בתקופה בו נחפר האתר לא הייתה מודעות לבעיות השימור. לאורך השנים לא נעשו באתר פעולות שימור מקיפות. בשנת 2005 הוכר האתר כאתר מורשת עולמית על ידי אונסק"ו, ובשנת 2006, לאחר ההכרה, הוכנה תוכנית שימור מקיפה לאתר.
