📖 About Nimrod Fortress

Nimrod Fortress is the largest medieval fortress in Israel, sitting on a narrow ridge 800 meters high on the slopes of Mount Hermon, above the Banias Reserve. The Ayyubid-Mamluk fortress from the 13th century commands a breathtaking view of the Golan Heights and the Galilee. The fortress was built by the Ayyubids in 1228 to guard the road to Damascus from the Crusaders, and was expanded by the Mamluks. The massive walls, towers, cisterns, and secret passages are well preserved — you can climb the towers, explore the vaulted halls, and descend into a giant rock-cut water cistern. Legend links the fortress to the biblical hunter Nimrod, though the name is later. From the fortress there is a 360-degree view — the Banias below, Hermon above, and the Golan all the way to the Sea of Galilee. The trail inside takes about 1.5 hours and involves climbing. Combine it with the nearby Banias. In winter there may be snow. Accessibility is limited due to stairs and steep paths.
