📖 About Mitzpe Ramon
Mitzpe Ramon is a unique town on the rim of the Ramon Crater (Makhtesh Ramon), an erosional crater of enormous dimensions: 40 km long, 2-10 km wide, and up to 500 meters deep. It is one of only seven makhteshim in the world, a geological formation unique to the Negev desert. The town was founded in 1951 but only recently emerged as a high-quality eco-tourism destination. The visitor center on the crater rim offers a stunning film about the formation of the crater 5 million years ago, a glass-gallery viewpoint over the cliff, and an interactive exhibition on the wildlife, plants, and geology. The crater itself is a paradise for hikers: the Carpentry trail, Prisim Stream, the colorful rocks of Gvanim Stream, and the black basalt hills. At sunset the colors take on an amazing reddish-orange hue. At night — stargazing without equal, recognized as a UNESCO International Dark Sky Reserve. In the town you can stay in unique guesthouses and dine at local restaurants serving Mediterranean food with a regional touch. For jeep tours, local companies offer a sunset experience inside the crater itself.
