📖 About Yad Vashem
Yad Vashem is Israels national memorial authority for the Holocaust — the most important site in the world for commemorating and researching the murder of six million Jews by the Nazis. Located on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem, it spans 18 hectares and combines a museum, research center, archive, library, and memorial gardens. The Holocaust History Museum (built in 2005 by architect Moshe Safdie) is the heart of Yad Vashem. It begins with the feeling of entering a wound — a long corridor full of slivers of light — and ends with a powerful view of Jerusalem. In between it presents hundreds of testimonies, photographs, personal documents, and original artifacts from the Holocaust. The Hall of Remembrance houses an eternal flame, with the names of 22 extermination camps engraved on it. The Childrens Memorial is a wrenching emotional experience: a dark room studded with 1.5 million virtual candles — one for each murdered child — with their names and ages read aloud. The Yad Vashem library is the largest in the world on the Holocaust: 200,000 books, 50 million pages of documents, and an archive of over 300,000 survivor testimonies. The Garden of the Righteous honors the 30,000 non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews. The visit is heavy but essential. Plan a minimum of 3-4 hours, register in advance for a free guided tour, and leave time to process. Admission to the entire museum and garden is free.
