📖 About Palace of Knossos
The Palace of Knossos in Crete is the most important archaeological site of Minoan Greece — the center of Europes oldest civilization, 4,000 years old. In mythology, this was the site of the Labyrinth of the Minotaur built by Daedalus for King Minos. The vast palace, excavated and partly reconstructed by archaeologist Arthur Evans, reveals a remarkably sophisticated world: hundreds of rooms, an advanced drainage and plumbing system, storerooms with giant jars, courtyards, and stunning colorful frescoes. Knossos is 5 km from Heraklion. The visit takes 1.5-2 hours; a guide or audio guide is recommended. Very hot in summer — arrive early. Combine with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which displays the original finds.
