📖 About Masada

Masada is one of Israels national heritage symbols and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a rock plateau roughly 400 meters above the Dead Sea at the eastern edge of the Judean Desert, it offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Dead Sea, the mountains of Moab, and the desert. The history is the heart of the visit: King Herod the Great built a luxurious palace and an impregnable fortress here in the 1st century BCE. About 130 years later, in 73 CE, it became the site of a legendary Roman siege against a group of Jewish rebels — a story told in detail by the historian Josephus Flavius. At the site you will find impressive remains of the three-tiered Northern Palace, a fine Roman bathhouse with original mosaics, a synagogue from the revolt period, food storehouses, a sophisticated rainwater collection system, and the remains of the execution court. The Snake Path climbs to the summit in about 45 minutes of steep hiking — best at sunrise. The site is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, with a modern visitor center, an explanatory film, and a restaurant. Two ways to reach the top: the Snake Path on foot (free, for the fit) or a modern cable car (extra charge, 3 minutes). Start your visit at 7:00 before the heat builds, and finish by 10:00. In summer temperatures can reach 45C, so plenty of water and a hat are essential.
