📖 About Caesarea
Caesarea National Park is one of the richest and most spectacular archaeological sites in Israel — a Roman-Byzantine-Crusader-Ottoman port city, entirely on the seashore. Herod the Great built it between 22 and 10 BCE as a vast harbor city in honor of Augustus Caesar, and for 1,500 years it was the capital of the Land of Israel and a center of Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Crusader rule. You can walk through the Roman government city: the arched main gate avenue, a high aqueduct carrying water from Nahal Taninim (3 km north), a magnificent amphitheater seating 4,000 that still hosts concerts, a hippodrome for chariot races that seated 10,000 spectators, and popular public baths. The great palace on the cliff was so impressive that Josephus Flavius called it worthy of being the house of God. The Herodian harbor was a revolutionary technological achievement: two concrete arms underwater that created a shield against storms. You can still dive there and see underwater remains — Caesarea is the only place in the world where you can dive in an ancient city. The Crusader area (built from 1191) includes fortified walls, a church, and a market. At the entrance, the high aqueduct is one of Israels iconic visual landmarks. The visit includes a 3D opening film, guided tours, and varied restaurants in the Crusader center. The summer amphitheater concerts are among the most important cultural events in Israel.

קיסריה היא עיר נמל שהוקמה בשנים 25–13 לפנה"ס. העיר הייתה המרכז המנהלי הרומי ביהודה מאז כינון פרובינקיה יודיאה (לאחר הדחת ארכלאוס בשנת 6 לספירה). היא שמרה על מעמד זה ביהודה, ולאחר מכן בפרובינקיה סוריה-פלשתינה עד 390, ולאחריו בפרובינקיה הביזנטית פלשתינה פרימה. העיר נקראה על שם אוגוסטוס קיסר. כיום חלק משטח העיר העתיקה הוא גן לאומי בניהול רשות הטבע והגנים ביחד עם החברה לפיתוח קיסריה. בסמוך לעתיקות קיסריה, הוקמה במאה ה-20 קיסריה המודרנית.
