מאחז הוא משלט מזמן מלחמת העצמאות של מדינת ישראל, הממוקם מצפון מזרח לקיבוץ שובל וסמוך לכביש ולמסילת הרכבת לבאר שבע. בקרבת הגבעה יש באר ונחל הנושאים את אותו השם. מקור השם בשמה של הגבעה בערבית, "מע'אז". במלחמה הוא היה משלט חשוב בקרבות על כיס פלוג'ה, היום באזור מצודת יואב. באזור התחולל קרב חרבת מחאז בין הפלמ"ח כנגד הצבא המצרי כאשר המשלט עבר מיד ליד עד שנותר בידי צה"ל. בצד הכביש היה שלט המתאר את המערכה על המשלט. ב-1 ביולי 2008 נחנך בסמוך למשלט מחלף מאחז שמחבר את אזור בית קמה לכביש 6.
