📖 About Meteora
Meteora is one of the most astonishing sights in the world — ancient Byzantine monasteries built atop giant rock pillars rising hundreds of meters above the plain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site combining a natural wonder with an incredible human achievement. In the 14th century, Orthodox Christian monks climbed the inaccessible peaks and built monasteries to pray far from the world, once reached only by rope ladders and nets. Of the original 24 monasteries, 6 remain active and open to visitors. The visit combines a scenic drive among the rocks, climbing steps to the monasteries, and viewing ancient frescoes. The scenery, especially at sunrise and sunset, is among the most impressive in Europe. Modest dress is required. Meteora is in northern Greece, about 4 hours from Athens; staying in nearby Kalambaka is recommended.
