Nahal Me'arot National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world, where evidence of 500,000 years of human evolution was found on the western slopes of Mount Carmel. Four large caves open in the limestone cliff — Tabun, Gamal, Nahal, and Gedi — where prehistoric humans lived, including Neanderthals and early modern humans who lived side by side. The finds include flint tools, graves, and dwelling remains that tell the story of the transition from hunter-gathering to agriculture. The site is unique in documenting an exceptionally long sequence of human settlement. The caves have displays and reconstructions of prehistoric human life, and a film explains. The trail climbs stairs between the caves. The visit takes about 1.5 hours. Suitable for families with school-age children. Combine it with the Carmel beaches or Zichron Yaakov.
