📖 About The Western Wall
The Western Wall, also known as the Kotel or the Wailing Wall, is the holiest site in Judaism and its central place of prayer. The western retaining wall of the Temple Mount, built by King Herod the Great in the 1st century BCE, is all that remains of the sacred compound of the Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The wall is part of a massive retaining structure whose original length was 488 meters. The section visible today in the prayer plaza is 57 meters long and 19 meters high. It is built of giant stones — each weighing between 2 and 100 tons — quarried on site. In the lowest 25 courses you can still see the original 2,000-year-old stonework. The plaza is divided into two sections: a larger mens section and a womens section. Millions of Jews visit each year to pray, place notes in the cracks of the wall, and hold bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies. The wall is open 24/7 for prayer (except Shabbat and Yom Kippur). A night visit is a unique experience — quieter, with dramatic lighting on the ancient stones. Right beside it, beneath the plaza floor, are the Western Wall Tunnels — a system of archaeological remains reaching back thousands of years. Guided tours run in English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, and French, lasting about an hour and a half.
