מצפה גבולות היה חלוץ ההתיישבות בנגב, ראשון מבין שלושת המצפים שהוקמו, עלה לקרקע במאי 1943 והיווה בסיס להקמת קיבוץ גבולות. המצפה הוקם על ידי חברי השומר הצעיר "קיבוץ ארץ ישראל ג'" (אשר ישבו בראשון לציון), ב-1946 הועברו לאזור אשדוד והקימו את קיבוץ חצור. תקופה קצרה ישבו במצפה אנשי גדוד ניר שעלו בליל 11 הנקודות לדנגור והקימו את קיבוץ נירים, אחריהם החזיקו מספר שבועות אנשי יחיעם (לפני עליתם על הקרקע). את הללו החליפו חברי קיבוץ אלמגור, אשר ישבו בפתח תקווה וקיבלו את השם גבולות. אליהם הצטרפה בנובמבר 1946 קבוצה בת 10 חברים שהיוותה את הבסיס להקמת קיבוץ גבולות כ-2 ק"מ צפונית למצפה.
