שִׁמְרוֹן הייתה אחת הערים החשובות בצפון ארץ ישראל בעת העתיקה. היא נזכרת בתנ"ך בשם זה בנחלת שבט זבולון, ובתעודות מחוץ למקרא בשם שמע'ון. בתקופת בית שני, המשנה והתלמוד נקראה בשם סימוניה, ובשל כך, זוהתה בתל הקרוי בערבית "תל סַמוּנִיֶה", המתנשא כ-60 מטרים מעל סביבתו. צלעו הצפון מזרחית של התל תלולה, והוא משתפל במתינות לכיוון דרום מערב. התל שוכן מצפון-מזרח למושב נהלל, בגבול עמק יזרעאל והגליל התחתון, ליד כביש הכניסה לתמרת.
