📖 About Beit Guvrin-Maresha
Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Land of a Thousand Caves. Beneath the southern lowlands hides a vast system of artificial caves carved into the soft chalk rock over thousands of years. The caves served every purpose: giant bell caves quarried for stone, columbarium caves for raising doves, ancient olive presses, water cisterns, and hideouts from the Bar Kokhba revolt. The acoustics in the bell caves are astonishing. Maresha was an important Hellenistic city, and Beit Guvrin a Roman-Byzantine city. The site also has a Roman amphitheater and a Crusader church. The colors, shapes, and silence in the caves create a unique experience. The tour is extensive and takes 2-3 hours by private car between the complexes. It is very family-friendly — children love exploring the caves. You can even join a real archaeological dig by prior arrangement.
