📖 About Old Jaffa
Old Jaffa is one of the oldest port cities in the world — continuously inhabited for over 4,000 years. Its stone alleys, picturesque harbor, and art galleries make it one of Israels most beloved destinations, right next to modern Tel Aviv. According to tradition, the prophet Jonah set sail from Jaffa toward Tarshish, and in Greek mythology Andromeda was chained to a rock here. Egyptians, Phoenicians, Romans, Crusaders, Arabs, and Ottomans all passed through the port and left their mark. Today Jaffa is a magical mix: the lively flea market with antiques and design, artist alleys full of galleries, fish restaurants facing the sea, and the Ottoman clock tower from 1903. Sunset over the harbor pier, with the Tel Aviv skyline opposite, is among the most beautiful in the country. We recommend combining a walk through the alleys, a visit to the flea market (open all week except Saturday), and a fish meal at one of the harbor restaurants. Entry is free, and it is an easy walk from the Tel Aviv promenade.
📚 From the encyclopedia
